Levine Museum of the New South

The Levine Museum brings the history of the South to life for all ages. The permanent exhibit, Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers: Charlotte and the Carolina Piedmont in the New South, examines the area’s post-Civil War history.Levine Museum Cotton Mills

The interactive exhibits allow you to explore a one room tenant farmers house and touch seed cotton. Further into the Levine Museum, machines used in cotton mills are on display. Here you can listen to recorded information that explains how each was used. Later, walk down Main Street and step into an early Belk department store, or sit in a barber’s chair waiting for a haircut.

The exhibit is also home to a lunch counter that features accounts from local sit-in leaders as well as photos, newspapers, and even voter’s ballots from the Civil Rights era. In addition, the Levine Museum hosts rotating exhibits on the second floor.
