Carolina Thread Trail

The Carolina Thread Trail spans 15 counties with more than 130 miles of greenways and conserved corridors in North and South Carolina. The trail heads are scattered around the greater Charlotte metro area and reach as far north as Love Valley, NC, south at Great Falls, SC, to the east at Albemarle, NC, and Cowpens National Battlefields near Gaffney, SC to the west.

The trails offer wonderful nature hiking experiences, and some paths are designated for bikes, mountain bikes and horse-back riding as well. The South Fork River Blueway has several paddle boat launches located along the trail. (Check for permit restrictions first.)

Launched in 2007, the Carolina Thread Trail will ultimately link together 15 counties and more than 2.3 million people. The trails preserve our natural areas and create spaces to explore nature, culture, science and history. While currently just over 130 miles of trails exist, the total planned effort will create 1,500 miles of trail over 7,300 square miles, linking more than 40 destinations over the next 10-20 years.

The Carolina Thread Trail is supported by the Foundation for the Carolinas and the Catawba Lands Conservancy is the lead agency on the project. Local community support and volunteers are also vital components on the Carolina Thread Trail system.
